One of the greatest American poets, Emily Dickinson wrote more than 1,700 poems during her lifetime (1830-1886). Very few of them were published while she was alive, though. These poems on the subject of eternity were published after her death in three volumes by her friends Mabel Loomis Todd and Thomas Wentworth Higginson. These editions were published between 1891 and 1896. Dickinson was so far ahead of her time in the mid-Victorian era, her verse sounds fresh and alive today.

Aphra Behn, 1640-1689, may have been the first person to write a novel in the English language. Details of her life are scant, although she’s known to have been a spy in the court of Charles II. Today she’s remembered mainly through her poetry, prose, and plays. Virginia Woolf name-checked her in “A Room of One’s Own.”
Montague Summers, 1880-1948, is considered a problematic figure by 21st century standards. He wrote often on the subject of evil, some would say obsessively. His other interests included Restoration Era English drama, including the work of Aphra Behn. He published his volume of her works in 1915.
